January 24, 2025 – The Las Vegas Raiders have made a bold move by hiring veteran coach Pete Carroll as their next head coach. After parting ways with Antonio Pierce, the Raiders have turned to the 73-year-old Super Bowl-winning coach to bring stability and leadership to the franchise.
NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero confirmed the news, reporting that Carroll will take over after spending a year as a senior advisor for the Seattle Seahawks. This will be Carroll’s fourth NFL head coaching stint, marking a return to the sidelines for one of the league’s most experienced leaders.
A Storied Coaching Career
Carroll’s coaching journey began 30 years ago with the New York Jets, though his tenure lasted only one season. He later spent three seasons with the New England Patriots before building a powerhouse program at USC. Carroll returned to the NFL in 2010 to coach the Seattle Seahawks, where he led the team for 14 successful seasons.
Under his leadership, the Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII, reached the playoffs 10 times, and became a perennial contender behind the legendary “Legion of Boom” defense.
While Carroll stepped back into an advisory role with Seattle in 2024, his passion for coaching remained strong. Now, he brings his “Always Compete” mantra to a Raiders team desperate for success.
Challenges and Opportunities in Vegas
The Raiders have struggled for decades, with their last division title and postseason victory dating back to 2002. Despite numerous coaching changes and two playoff berths in the past two decades, the franchise has failed to achieve consistent success.
Carroll, who becomes the oldest head coach in NFL history at 74 (surpassing Romeo Crennel), will inherit a team in need of major roster improvements. Partnering with newly hired general manager John Spytek, Carroll must address key issues, including quarterback uncertainty.
The Raiders hold the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, providing an opportunity to secure a franchise quarterback. Speculation about reuniting Carroll with former Seahawks QB Russell Wilson adds an intriguing twist, though their Seattle departure was not without controversy.
Loaded AFC West
Carroll joins a stacked AFC West, featuring coaching heavyweights like Andy Reid (Chiefs), Sean Payton (Broncos), and Jim Harbaugh (Chargers). This reunion with Harbaugh, his long-time rival in both college (USC vs. Stanford) and the NFL (Seattle vs. San Francisco), promises exciting matchups for fans.
A New Era for the Raiders
While significant challenges lie ahead, Carroll’s wealth of experience and proven leadership could be the catalyst the Raiders need. From building out a strong coaching staff to reshaping the roster, the task is immense. However, with the guidance of Carroll and minority owner Tom Brady, Raiders fans may finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Whether this move marks the start of a new era of success for Las Vegas remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Pete Carroll’s arrival brings renewed hope to the desert.
